SEDCON - Core SEDCON Services

The SEDCON staff directly support several services. These include:
Interactive Login

With some restrictions, the VUSE SEDCON loginhost provides access to a UNIX(TM) shell to authorized users.

Electronic Mail

The VUSEMail system is an electronic mail system for SEDCON account holders. The VUSEMail MTA is sendmail version 8.12.10. Access to VUSEMail mailboxes is supported via NFS, POP2, POP3, and IMAP4rev1. The POP and IMAP servers are from the University of Washington. VUSEMail setup information is available.

Note: If you access a VUSEMail box via POP2, POP3 or IMAP4 and then access it via NFS, you may find a pseudo-message at the beginning of each mailbox. This is expected behavior and should not cause panic. You should not see this pseudo-message if you access your mailboxes only via POP or IMAP. The pseudo-message maintains information about the mailbox needed by the POP and IMAP servers to support the requirments of the latest revisions of the POP3 and IMAP4 protocols.

Note: As of October 2000, a SEDCON account no longer automatically includes a working email address. Too many people were unaware that a SEDCON account had previously included a VUSEMail address and mail was being delivered into mailboxes that no one was reading. A new SEDCON account applicant can still get a VUSEMail address, but must now explicitly request one and indicate that it is her or his responsibility to deal with messages sent to that address.

Anonymous FTP

The VUSE FTP server runs a WU-FTPD.ORG ftp server daemon. This service is supported only for the exchange of information from a VUSE SEDCON account holder to the outside world or from someone in the outside world to a VUSE SEDCON account holder.

This is not a place for the exchange of stolen software!

World Wide Web Publishing

The SEDCON WWW service supports personal publishing and server-based active WWW technologies. The main VUSE WWW server runs the Apache HTTP server (version 1.2.5).

File Backup and Restoral

The SEDCON Backup Service supports network backups of your important data. A central computer communicates with all registered clients to copy their data to the tape library located in the appropriate building. This service is provided to all School of Engineering faculty, staff, and graduate students. If you have mission critical data on your machine, please register it with this service to have it backed up regularly.

Network Host Registration

This service allows VUSE computer users to register a computer or other network device for one or more statically-assigned Internet addresses.
